EOC Week 1: How to Make it in America

"Many people view branding as simply creating an identity for a company composed of a logo, a name and an identifiable style. Yet branding is much more than this. It encompasses both the visual and tangible elements of the brand, as well as the emotional and intangible pieces that create a connection between the brand and the consumer." (page 12)

What they did right during episode 1 "How to Make it in America" was when the have the little boy on the train trying to make some money by selling candy on the train as a convenience, and he’s honest about the fact that he’s trying to make money for himself, that he is not a boy scout, or a part of some charity. This little boy is branding himself, which goes along with the quote above in relation to branding is more than just the elements, in order to get your brand out there you need to tie in the emotional benefits. What they did wrong in the first episode was when Ben and Domingo decide to buy illegal leather jackets for $500 and flip the profit on the streets. They ended up profiting $2,000 dollars worth of merchandise. However, this was all before the police caught them selling without the vendor’s license they would need in order to be selling on the street in the first place. Now with the money they made they decide to ask for another loan of $3,000 dollars to buy premium denim and make pants. This over all idea goes great with the idea of getting ones brands out their, and creating a connection that will last with the consumer, but what's so wrong about it is the illegal aspects of the idea, and in the end getting into trouble with the law can cause you to loose for money then you profited.
